A. Z. Kelley Elementary School opened its doors on August 14, 2006 to students in grades K-4. The school was built because of overcrowding in the Antioch cluster of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. The first year, 2006-2007, the school had 489 students. The official dedication ceremony was held on September 13, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. The school was named after Alfred Z. Kelley, a man who filed a case on behalf of his son, Robert W. Kelley. Robert Kelley was denied registration to East High School. A. Z. Kelley’s efforts helped the desegregation of schools in Nashville, Tennessee.
